It’s been raining awards for Ambuja Cement, which has been conferred with a maximum number of awards – eight in all – during the ‘CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2018’ in recognition of its visionary approach in the areas of sustainable development, social inclusiveness and inspiring responsible business practices. For the past nine years, Ambuja has been winning recognitions at this prestigious award ceremony.
The company won ‘Commendation for Significant Achievement’ under Corporate Excellence category. At the plant level, three units – Maratha Cement Works (Maharashtra), Ambujanagar (Gujarat) and Bhatapara (Chhattisgarh) – did the company proud by securing ‘Excellence in Environment Management’ award each in Domain Excellence category.
In the space of Corporate Social Responsibility led by Ambuja Cement Foundation, four plants – Maratha Cement Works (Maharashtra), Ambujanagar (Gujarat) and Bhatapara (Chhattisgarh) and Farakka (West Bengal) – bagged one award each (Domain Excellence category) for their concerted efforts that transformed lives by energising, enabling and involving the communities around, thus facilitating economic progress.
Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog and Sanjiv Puri, MD of ITC Ltd presented the awards to Ambuja’s representatives at the glittering awards ceremony held recently in New Delhi.
The award framework includes around 250 questions/indicators covering governance, ecology and social dimensions of doing business encapsulated in 15 aspects of sustainable development. The evaluation exercise involved a multi-step process that spread over a period of six months. A team of CII-certified Sustainability Assessors spent hours to assess the sustainability performance of applicants based on the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Business Excellence Model. The applicants underwent a rigorous assessment process (desk assessment followed by site assessment), thereafter the results of each assessment were reviewed by a pre-eminent Jury – comprising former bureaucrats, representatives of government, civil society and academia – at two stages before a final decision was taken.
CII-ITC Sustainability Awards is organized by India’s premier industry association — the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for more than a decade. It recognises exemplary performance in economic, social and environmental dimensions of Indian businesses. These accolades motivate Ambuja to perform beyond the expectations of stakeholders and continue to set higher benchmarks as a responsible corporate citizen. More than recognition, the Awards measured performance and provided detailed feedback for opportunities to excel.
